Security

What type of encryption does Safebox use?

Safebox uses AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption with a 256-bit key. The key is derived from the password using PBKDF2 (10,000 iterations).

Is the encryption standard used by Safebox configurable?

No. Safebox uses AES an efficient, proven encryption specification which has been widely adopted as the industry standard. It is used by the U.S. government among others.

Safebox is designed to be an easy to use and approachable way to secure your content before syncing it to the cloud. Letting users select the encryption specification is a sure way to make them feel confused. It is our job to understand the technical details of the options available and select the best on your behalf.

Does Safebox encrypt file and folder names?

Yes. Safebox encrypts the name of files and folders before they are synced to the cloud.

Does Safebox require an account or "call home"?

Safebox does not require you to register an account in order to use it. Once you install Safebox you are good to go. None of your information, file details or keys are uploaded to our servers. It is your data and none of our business.

Safebox periodically checks to see if new versions of the application are available. However, this is only enabled if you request it and can be disabled at any time using preferences within Safebox.

How do I change my master password?

During setup Safebox prompts you to specify a master password. It then uses this password to help secure your Safebox contents. When you install Safebox on your other machines you'll be asked to re-enter your master password. Once provided these Safebox instances will be able to decrypt your synced content.

If you decide to change your master password you can do so using the Safebox preferences. On changing the password Safebox will re-encrypt all your Safebox content. Next time your other machines attempt to sync, their Safebox instances will notice the master password has changed. You will be prompted to enter the new master password so you can once again decrypt your Safebox content on these machines.

What should I do if I forget my master password?

Safebox is designed to be maximize your privacy by letting you secure your content. To do this it generates a unique cypher key based on your master password. It is purposely designed to only let the user who knows this master password decrypt your data. This means if you've forgotten your master password there isn't anything which can be done. So please make ever effort to select a password you find memorable - but don't write it down :)

Safebox provides an option to reset your master password. As warned by the application this will erase all your Safebox files but lets you start from scratch if needed. So use this option with care.

Can Safebox be used without a license?

Yes, when you install Safebox initially it run in a trial mode. This lets you try out the software to see how it works. While running in trial mode Safebox can secure up to five files. Once you exceed this threshold you can either remove some files from your Safebox folder, to return under the limit or purchase a license.

Can the one license be used by both the Windows and Mac OS X versions of Safebox?

Yes. The one Safebox license works across all desktop platforms.

Can a single Safebox license be used across multiple desktop machines?

Yes. The license allows you to use the software on any computers you own and personally use. If you have multiple machines which sync your data then the one license can be used across all of them.

Do I have to pay an annual subscription to use Safebox?

No. A one time license purchase is all you need.

Syncing

Does Safebox sync individual files or a single large disk image?

Safebox works at a file level. As needed it encrypts and decrypts individual files. As a result it consumes as little of your bandwidth, memory and CPU as possible.

What is the .safeboxdata folder used for and can it be removed?

The files located in your Safebox folder are encrypted and placed in your cloud syncing service's folder (such as Dropbox) for syncing to your other devices. To avoid confusion Safebox places these encrypted files in a hidden ".safeboxdata" folder within the syncing service's folder.

The .safeboxdata folder and its contents cannot be renamed or remove. Safebox is responsible for managing these files and won't work correctly if they are modified.

If you stop using Safebox you and have uninstalled it you can safely remove the .safeboxdata folder.

What does an alert badge on the Safebox icon represent?

On rare occasions Safebox may encounter an issue while trying to synchronize your encrypted content. In these instances Safebox displays an alert badge over the Safebox icon. This indicates Safebox requires user intervention before it can resume syncing.

When this happens click on the Safebox icon and select the "Troubleshoot..." option from the menu. Safebox will display a dialog with a description of the issue and instructions on how to resolve it. Once the issue has been resolved press the dialog's "Sync Now" button to resume syncing.

Installation

On what platforms is Safebox available?

Safebox is currently available for Mac OS X Lion 10.7 or higher and Windows XP SP3 or higher. Safebox supports both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows.

How can I change the location of my Safebox folder?

If you want to move the Safebox folder all you need do is follow the instructions on Safebox's General Preferences tab. Simply use File Explorer (on Windows) or Finder (on Mac OS X) to relocate your Safebox folder. Safebox will then ask for the updated location when it next attempts to sync.

I've moved my Dropbox folder, how can I get Safebox to use the new location?

Safebox will automatically detect the folder it syncs with has been moved. When this happens it displays an alert icon over its system tray icon, indicating the folder is missing.

To resolve, click on the system tray icon and select "Configure Safebox..." from the menu. In the dialog that appears you can enter the new location of your Dropbox folder.

How to uninstall Safebox

To uninstall the application on Mac OS X you can simply delete the Safebox program from your Applications directory.

On Windows Safebox can be deleted using the "Add/Remove Programs" command in the Control Panel.

Safebox intentionally does not remove the files in your Safebox folder when it is uninstalled. If you want to delete these files you can manually do so on each of the machine you installed Safebox.
